Photos: Edmonton Humane Society: You know you want one!

Hey Blog Followers!

I’m now on board as the volunteer photographer for the Edmonton Humane Society, and last saturday for the first time I spent some time at their brand new building taking some photos of their adoptables. For those of you who were familiar with their old building on yellowhead and 66st, their new building on the northwest is a palace compared to the old building. I wont be suprised if animals run away from their homes in hoping of spending some time in the new building. Photographing animals is so hard! It takes quite some time for them to become accustomed to me and the camera. The trick with cats is to have them get used to me, but not give them any attention otherwise, cats will follow you around at your feet. You also have to work very quickly, so I had to put away the flash and shoot wide open.

Here are a few shots from my afternoon there! I’ll be spending quite a bit more time helping them out as they have a lot of work for me to do!

Check out the eyes. Incredible – i’ve never seen this before!

I remember his name – Hudson. Very shy pooch – we go along well.

Jasper Long Weekend: Emily and Michael

Hello! The February long weekend Lindsey and I headed west to Jasper for some good ol’ hangin’ out and for a day of skiing at Marmot Basin. On the sunday we met up with Emily and Michael at the Jasper Park Lodge for a simple photo shoot. I shot Emily and Michaels wedding last year, but we thought it would be a good idea for an easy post-valentines day shoot. After the first ten shots or so, something wasn’t quite working out with my camera. The white balance could just not be nailed, and seemed to be very random, and the shutter didn’t seem to be operating like it’s usual self. The histogram on my display wasn’t showing me accurate results according to what the image preview was showing. So, I pretty much knew this was the death of my camera. I got more life out of it than I should have. I continued the shoot with the random results my camera decided to give me. Thanks Emily and Michael for the shoot!

It’s been a long time since I put together a blog entry! I’ve been learning some fun new tricks with photoshop and so I though I would slap some images together to show off. Normally, when it comes down to my post production of a photo shoot I don’t do too much heavy photoshopping. Some color tweaks here and there, some black and white methods, skin retouching, the usual. I thought I would challenge myself and do some crazy, heavy, way out there photoshopping and see what I could come up with. I’ve always wanted to play around with textures, and I always love the antique and vintage look of photos, so I set forth with the goal of trying to create an image that was still very usable and with a very low “fromage factor”. I selected a handul of some recent work, and as you will see below some are a hit and some are a miss. But I understand that can be subjective depending on who’s looking at it. So…

This wedding I shot a wedding for an old highschool friend at the top of a mountain at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort that was just absolutely amazing. But, that post can be saved for later. I made it back to Edmonton 45 minutes before game time to coach our Mavericks to win first place! Sorry if you came here looking for wedding photos, but instead you get to see the girls who all played perfect. Our indoor season before this outdoor season was dismal – we won one game. We made up for that this summer. From left to right, starting in the back. Me, Chantal, Lindsey, Christy (hat trick today!), Captain Jules, Alysson, Kathleen, Elisa, Samantha. Ladies, sorry. Some of us look pretty goofy in this shot – me especially. Trust me, it was the best of the bunch.
