Weird. Hostage situation at discovery channel headquarters. I'd be pissed too - shark week should be two weeks long! # 2010/09/01

Mavericks: Lane and Christy

May 25, 2009

On Friday last week I had the pleasure of photographing Lane and Christy.  Both ladies are star mid-fielders of the infamous St. Albert Maverick, of which I coached their last indoor and outdoor seasons.  Normally I am very anti legislative grounds, but it has been a very, very, very long time since I shot there, but the sun was out in full force with no clouds so I figured the grounds would be a good choice to help create me some nice light and try some things I haven’t done in a long time.

Lane and Christy, thank you for the great time, you were both wonderful to photograph. I hope these images help your relationship flourish.  I am happy to share these photos below.

May Long Weekend Camping Trip

May 20, 2009

Four days before the May long weekend I decided to get an impromptu camping trip put together – and it actually worked out!  Ian, Sam, Lindsey and Myself set off for Wapiti campground in Jasper National Park despite knowing full well what kind of weather we could run into according to the forecasts.  The days were nice, but the nights were cold. We got some mild rain Saturday night, and rain and icy snow all Sunday night and we woke up to snow Monday morning.

Here are just a few simple photos from our adventure. If you follow me on facebook, you can find the whole set there.

Saturday early evening we drove out to Athabasca Falls to, well, check out the falls. We spent most of our time just hanging out at the bottom along the
Athabascan River. Below, some mossy rocks.

There was a portion lakeside where tourists have built inukshuks (excuse the spelling).

Textures of the riverbed rocks. They’ll soon be covered in water as the glacier melts in the summer.

I entrusted Ian with my camera to take a few shots as we hung out on top of a large boulder lakeside.

Ian and I hiked up to the top of Old Fort Point and then continued the loop down the other side.  Our campsite is just behind that
furthest ridge of trees.

Ok, so these photos are a little out of order.  The four of us did a hike near Pyramid Lake earlier in the day on Saturday. There was possibly
good potential to see some bears, or get eaten by a bear on this hike, but the ladies and pooch were tired so we headed back.  We were in a heavy wildlife
crossing of somekind.

Here’s our collection of fine french beer and new zealand wine. It made the rain a little more bearable! I suggest you pick up the wine you
see on the right.  Not only was it excellent tasting, but a portion of the sales of that wine go towards the Ontario SPCA.

Edmonton Humane Society – Zack Stortini and Marty Chan

May 14, 2009

Today I spent some more time doing volunteer photography work for the Edmonton Humane Society. It’s a lot of work photographing all of the adoptable cats – which there are many of! These images below are all straight out of the camera – even the black and whites.  I decided to test out some in camera processing and black and white techniques to see how it helps with my workflow.

On May 30th, the Edmonton Humane Society will be hosting their grand opening in their fresh out of the oven new facilities – which I suggest you all attend! Zack Stortini of the Edmonton Oilers will be on location giving autographs. As well Marty Chan, a local author will be on location signing autographs for his new childrens book, “True Story”, inspired by two black and white kittens he adopted two years ago.  Zack didn’t remember me from when I met him in line at the Save-on-Foods two years ago – but that’s coo’ – I won’t hold it against him!  He’s still the extrememly down to earth guy I met back then, and it’s awesome that he’s being a spokesperson for the EHS.  Marty Chan is awesome, and i’m glad I met him.  His personality is wonderful to be around, and i’m happy he’s local! If you have young children please check out his books!

Thank you for stopping by!

Photos: Edmonton Humane Society: You know you want one!

May 6, 2009

Hey Blog Followers!

I’m now on board as the volunteer photographer for the Edmonton Humane Society, and last saturday for the first time I spent some time at their brand new building taking some photos of their adoptables.  For those of you who were familiar with their old building on yellowhead and 66st, their new building on the northwest is a palace compared to the old building.  I wont be suprised if animals run away from their homes in hoping of spending some time in the new building.  Photographing animals is so hard! It takes quite some time for them to become accustomed to me and the camera.  The trick with cats is to have them get used to me, but not give them any attention otherwise, cats will follow you around at your feet. You also have to work very quickly, so I had to put away the flash and shoot wide open.

Here are a few shots from my afternoon there! I’ll be spending quite a bit more time helping them out as they have a lot of work for me to do!

Check out the eyes. Incredible – i’ve never seen this before!

I remember his name – Hudson. Very shy pooch – we go along well.

The eyes! People will be fighting over taking him home I think!
